Where exactly did this supposed horror cliche come from which has the black guy or girl dying first?
I may not be an expert, but it seems to me nobody used to talk about this until Scream made self referencing cool. After that it seemed to be the norm to hear "oh, he's black, he'll die first" - even if it didn't actually happen. The idea that the black person dies first seemed to really catch on.
I didn't understand it then when I was young and thought I had seen a lot of horror movies, and I don't understand it now that I'm a little older and know I've seen many horror movies. Now I will grant you, if you're black and you're in a horror flick you will probably be dead by the time the credits roll.....but first? I just don't know about that.
Where did this cliche come from and in what films does it actually occur?
The only two I can think of off the top of my head are The Shining - where we've already been subjected to a lot before Scatman buys it - and Scream 2 (where I believe the two victims even joke about black people dying first before meeting up with Ghostface in the theater).
Any info would be appreciated, thanks! |
