Why did the Comic Book Industry crash in the 90s?

I did research and it turned out that comics were selling over a million a piece, with titles like Superman and X-Men selling over 4 million a piece, and it got to the point where X-Men passed the 8 million mark.

Comics were so huge that they spawned TV shows that became instantly popular world wide, The X-Men cartoon plus the comics, became extremely popular in Japan and Mexico, and things continued to sky rocket, then out of the blue moon, the industry crashed.

It took the comic book industry a little over a decade to start selling over 200,000 an issue which is slowly growing again, But why did it crash in the first place?
