Digital Nasties Studio Announces the Official 1999 Soundtrack Release of The Cursed Reflection

A newly restored horror score remastered from surviving analogue reel‑to‑reel tapes

The Cursed Reflection Soundtrack Cover

Digital Nasties Studio is proud to announce the Gumroad release of the complete 1999 original motion picture soundtrack for The Cursed Reflection, newly restored and remastered from the film’s surviving analogue reel‑to‑reel tapes. This marks the first time the full 32‑track score has been made available in high‑quality digital format, preserving the eerie sonic identity that defined the film’s unsettling atmosphere.

Recovered from the Studio Archive

The original soundtrack masters were tracked in late 1998 and early 1999 on a pair of ageing Ferrograph and Akai reel‑to‑reel machines, using ¼‑inch tape stock that had been stored in the Digital Nasties Studio archive for over two decades. When the tapes were rediscovered earlier this year, engineers noted oxide shedding, minor print‑through, and tension inconsistencies typical of late‑90s consumer and semi‑pro tape formulations.

Before any transfer work began, each reel underwent a controlled thermal treatment to stabilise the binder and reduce shedding. Several reels required manual tension correction due to slight warping along the edges — a common issue for tapes stored in non‑climate‑controlled environments during the early 2000s.

High‑Resolution Transfer & Restoration

The restoration team performed fresh transfers at 24‑bit / 96 kHz, using a calibrated playback chain designed to preserve the warmth and noise profile of the original recordings. Engineers applied:

  • Azimuth realignment for each cue
  • Spectral repair to remove mechanical clicks and tape blemishes
  • Phase correction on stereo cues with drift
  • Low‑frequency rumble reduction without flattening the analogue character
  • Selective noise reduction to retain tape hiss where musically appropriate

Several cues — including Unsteady Ground and The Floor Remembers — required micro‑editing to reconstruct damaged transients and restore missing high‑frequency detail lost to tape wear.

Authentic 1999 Tone Preserved

Rather than modernising the score, the remastering process focused on preserving the dark, claustrophobic tone of the original 1999 mix. The result is a soundtrack that feels era‑accurate: cold, minimal, analogue‑driven, and unmistakably late‑90s in its production aesthetic.

The release also includes two standalone vocal tracks — Cracks in the Frame and Something in the Static — presented exactly as they were archived, with only light mastering applied to maintain their raw, atmospheric quality.
