A Look Back: Challenges of Remastering Our Early Video Nasties
As Digital Nasties Studio delves deeper into restoring and re-releasing gems from the archives (alongside producing new nightmares!), we often receive requests for digital versions of some of our much older, deep-catalogue titles from the late 90s and early 2000s. We love the enthusiasm! However, we wanted to shed some light on the significant technical challenges involved with bringing some of these early works up to modern standards.
Back in the day, especially for ultra-low-budget passion projects, films weren't always shot on professional film stock. Many early independent productions utilized standard definition consumer or prosumer video formats like Video8, Hi8, MiniDV, and Digital8. While revolutionary at the time for accessibility, these formats present major hurdles for high-definition remastering.

The Deinterlacing Dilemma
Most older video formats recorded images using an 'interlaced' method, capturing odd and even horizontal lines separately in fields. On modern progressive displays (HDTVs, monitors), playing this back directly results in ugly 'combing' artifacts, especially during motion. The process of 'deinterlacing' – combining these fields into a single progressive frame – is complex. Simple methods often result in softness or loss of vertical resolution, while more advanced motion-adaptive techniques can sometimes introduce different visual errors or require significant processing power without perfect results.
The Upscaling Conundrum
Simply 'upscaling' standard definition (SD) footage (roughly 720x576 or 720x480 pixels) to High Definition (HD, 1920x1080) or 4K (3840x2160) doesn't magically create detail that wasn't there. Basic upscaling just makes the pixels bigger, often leading to a soft, blocky, or blurry image. While advanced AI upscalers have emerged, they can struggle with noisy, low-resolution video sources like old tapes.
A common artifact we encounter when attempting to upscale interlaced, tape-based SD footage is severe microblocking. This looks like blocky compression artifacts, where parts of the image break down into small squares, especially in complex or low-light scenes. Other issues can include excessive noise, waxy-looking textures, or an unnaturally 'processed' appearance.
Our Quality Commitment (and the Bad News)
At Digital Nasties Studio, we pride ourselves on the quality of our releases, whether it's a new production or a restoration like "Sewer Dwellers". Releasing older titles derived from SD tape masters with heavy deinterlacing artifacts and severe upscaling issues like microblocking simply doesn't meet the standard we, or you, expect for a standalone purchase on VOD, Blu-ray, or other digital home media.
Therefore, it is unlikely that many titles originally shot and mastered only on formats like Video8, Hi8, or MiniDV will receive dedicated HD re-releases from us in the near future.
The Future?
Technology constantly evolves. While standalone releases are improbable now, it's possible some of this older footage might surface as bonus material on other releases, or perhaps future restoration techniques will yield better results. For now, our focus remains on restoring titles where high-quality film elements exist and producing new, exciting genre cinema.
