'The Graveyard of Death (2005)' UHD Release Postponed Due to Technical Challenges

We have an unfortunate update regarding the planned Ultra HD Blu-ray release of the 2005 cult favourite, "The Graveyard of Death". Despite significant effort and anticipation from both us and the fans, we have made the difficult decision to postpone this release indefinitely due to unforeseen technical challenges encountered during the remastering process.

As many enthusiasts know, the film holds a special place in the annals of low-budget UK horror. Originally shot on standard definition PAL video (720x576) back in 2005, the production was ambitious for its time, utilizing a progressive 25p frame rate, a hard matte to achieve a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, and even experimenting with the expanded xyYCC colour space on the original master recordings.

Unfortunately, the primary source materials available to us today are not those original camera masters, but rather tapes derived from a subsequent re-edit and SD remaster completed several years after the initial release. This extra generation, combined with the original SD source limitations, has presented significant hurdles for creating a true high-definition SDR, let alone a High Dynamic Range (HDR) master suitable for UHD Blu-ray.

Technical Hurdles

Our goal was to deliver a stunning 4K UHD presentation featuring both HDR10 and Dolby Vision, complemented by newly created Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 sound mixes. While the audio remastering process was yielding positive results, the visual side proved insurmountable with current technology and available materials.

• Upscaling Artifacts: Attempting to upscale the 720x576p source (potentially compromised by the previous re-edit) to 4K resolution resulted in persistent and unacceptable microblocking artifacts, particularly visible in darker scenes and areas of complex texture. Eliminating these blocks without causing excessive softness or other unwanted visual side-effects proved impossible.
• Colour Space & HDR Conversion: Mapping the unique, wider xyYCC colour information (assuming it was perfectly preserved on the intermediate master, which is uncertain) to the Rec.2020 colour space required for HDR10 and Dolby Vision, while maintaining the director's original intent and avoiding banding or unnatural saturation, was exceptionally complex and did not yield satisfactory results.
• Source Integrity: While originally 25p, the nature of the available re-edited master tapes introduced complexities that, combined with the scaling and colour issues, prevented us from achieving a clean, stable image that meets modern UHD standards.

Quality First - Release Postponed

Digital Nasties Studio is committed to releasing films at the highest possible quality. We cannot, in good conscience, release a UHD of "The Graveyard of Death" that suffers from significant visual flaws. Therefore, the planned UHD Blu-ray (and any associated high-definition digital release) is postponed indefinitely.

Future Possibilities?

We know this news will be disappointing to many fans who were eagerly awaiting this release. While a standalone UHD is off the table *for now*, we haven't entirely closed the book. Restoration technology is always advancing. It's conceivable that we might revisit this title in the future, perhaps as part of a potential (currently hypothetical) box set that could include the much-rumoured sequels, "Part II" and "Part III". Such a collection might allow for different presentation choices or justify the extremely intensive (and costly) restoration work needed.
